NASCAR is an American auto racing sanctioning and operating company that oversees stock car racing. It is considered one of the top-ranked motorsports organizations globally and is a major spectator sport in America. The heart of NASCAR lies in stock car racing, where modified production cars (stock cars) compete on oval tracks, road courses, and even dirt tracks.

Founded by Bill France Sr. in 1948, NASCAR has a rich history rooted in moonshine runners during Prohibition. These daring drivers evolved into competitors, racing against each other with pride.

The ladder system includes three main series:

  1. Cup Series: The premier division featuring top drivers and iconic races like the Daytona 500.
  2. Xfinity Series: A stepping stone for young talent, often racing on the same tracks as the Cup Series.
  3. Truck Series: Trucks compete in exciting races, showcasing both skill and power.

NASCAR Schedule:

The NASCAR Cup Series runs a thrilling schedule across America, with 36 points-paying races in a season. Notable races include the Southern 500, the Daytona 500, and the Coke Zero Sugar 400. Races take place on various tracks: superspeedways, short tracks, dirt tracks, road courses, and street circuits.

The defending Cup Series champion for the 2024 season is Ryan Blaney.

Zheng Qinwen and Donna Vekić face off

There was a late-night thriller match between Zheng Qinwen and Donna Vekić at the 2024 US Open,  that set a record for the latest finish in women’s match history at this prestigious tournament.

2024 US Open Fourth Round

The two players met again after the Paris Olympics in the fourth round of the 2024 US Open. This match was particularly memorable as it set the record for the latest finish in women’s match history at the tournament, concluding at 2:15 a.m. Zheng won this encounter as well, with a score of 7-6 (2), 4-6, 6-2. The match lasted nearly three hours and was a rematch of their Olympic final, further intensifying their rivalry.

 Head-to-Head Record

As of now, Zheng Qinwen leads their head-to-head record 2-1. Their matches have been closely contested, with Zheng emerging victorious in both their most recent encounters at the Olympics and the US Open, while Vekić’s sole win came earlier in their rivalry.

2024 Paris Olympics Final

Their most notable recent match occurred at the 2024 Paris Olympics, where Zheng Qinwen defeated Donna Vekić to win the gold medal and Donna Vekic got the Silver medal. The match ended with a score of 6-2, 6-3, showcasing Zheng’s dominance on the clay surface. This victory was pivotal for Zheng, as it not only secured her the gold but also highlighted her rising status in women’s tennis.

Zheng, the 21-year-old from Wuhan (China), proved her resilience once again. In their previous encounter at the Paris 2024 Olympic gold-medal match, she had defeated Vekić convincingly with a 6-2, 6-3 score.

However, this time on the hard courts of Arthur Ashe Stadium, Vekić came prepared. She amped up her baseline aggression, taking the ball early and flat to rush Zheng.

Despite the pressure, Zheng remained unfazed. She played freely and courageously, trading 12 holds of serve with Vekić in the opening set, which eventually went into a tiebreak. Zheng’s 15 winners and seven aces helped her secure the set.

In the second set, Vekić fought back, earning a break of serve and taking the set with a backhand winner. But Zheng responded with clinical precision in the third set, breaking Vekić’s serve immediately and sealing the victory.

Vekić, ranked 24th, showcased her ability to take the ball early. Her summer surge continued, and she pushed Zheng to the limit. Unfortunately, a poorly executed drop shot at 3-2, 30-all in the third set proved costly for Vekić. Despite the missed opportunity, her performance was outstanding.

What Next:

In the quarterfinals, Zheng will face World No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka, setting up a rematch of this year’s Australian Open final. The match ended at a staggering 2:15 a.m., making it the latest finish in US Open history for a women’s match. Andy Murray a star player of the game showed concern over the late-night matches and advised the management to reconsider the timing schedule so that players get proper rest and the public could enjoy full.
