The 2022–2023 mpox Outbreak

Background:

In May 2022, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared an emergency due to a multi-country outbreak of monkeypox, a viral disease. The initial cluster of cases was detected in the United Kingdom, where the first case was found in a patient with recent travel history from Nigeria (where the disease is endemic). This outbreak marked the first time monkeypox had spread widely outside Central and West Africa.

Symptoms and other facts:

The disease has been reported in 113 countries and territories (111 with confirmed cases and 2 with suspected cases only). The outbreak is caused by the clade IIb variant of the virus. Monkeypox manifests with fever, non-specific symptoms, and a rash with lesions that usually last 2–4 weeks. While some patients experience numerous lesions, others may have only a single lesion in the mouth or on the genitals, making diagnosis challenging. Efforts include public awareness campaigns and repurposing smallpox vaccines.

Public Health Emergency:

On July 23, 2022, the WHO declared the outbreak a public health emergency of international concern (PHEIC). The Director-General of WHO emphasized the need for urgent action due to the rapid global spread and novel modes of transmission.

Current Status:

WHO has declared mpox a public emergency of the International level.  As of August 6, 2024, there have been 99,518 confirmed cases and 207 deaths across 116 countries. While the PHEIC was lifted in May 2023, cases continue to occur at relatively low levels. Monkeypox remains a significant global health challenge, and efforts to control its spread continue.

The State Fair of Texas and the Firearm Ban

Aban on firearmsat State Fair of Texas has sparked both controversy and conversation.

Background:

The State Fair of Texas, an annual celebration known for its corn dogs, deep-fried delights, and the iconic five-story cowboy figure named Big Tex, has laid down a new rule: No guns allowed. This decision comes in the wake of a shooting incident that occurred last year on the fairgrounds, which cover a sprawling 277 acres in the heart of Dallas.

Republican lawmakers, who have championed expanded gun rights in Texas, expressed outrage over the ban. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton threatened legal action unless the fair reversed its decision. He stated, “Dallas has fifteen days to fix the issue, otherwise I will see them in court.” The tension between gun rights and public safety has now centered on this beloved institution.

The State Fair Experience:

The State Fair of Texas, dating back to 1886, is more than just a fair—it’s a cultural phenomenon. Visitors enjoy a maze of midway games, car shows, and the towering Texas Star Ferris wheel. The fairgrounds also host the annual college football rivalry between the University of Texas and the University of Oklahoma. And who can forget Big Tex? After a fiery mishap in 2012, the return of this towering cowboy mascot was met with great fanfare.

Defending the Ban:

Fair spokesperson Karissa Condoianis acknowledged that the ban has attracted both criticism and praise. Previously, the fair allowed concealed carry of firearms, even when most other public events had ceased to permit the same.

In the heart of Texas, where gun ownership is deeply ingrained, the State Fair’s decision to ban firearms has ignited a spirited debate. As the fair reopens in September, visitors will experience a different kind of showdown—one that pits tradition against safety.
