Australia has decided to slash the annual intake of immigrants to 2.5 lakhs by tightening the visa rules. The decision was taken after the number was expected to rise to 5 lakhs this year. Home Affairs Minister Clare O’Neil unveiled a new immigration policy. It has improved visa pathways for migrants with “Specialists” and “Essential” skills.
Under the new policies, Higher ratings would be necessary in their English tests for international students and there would be more scrutiny on a student’s second visa application that would prolong their stay.
Home Affairs Minister Clare O’Neil said, “Our strategy will bring migration numbers back to normal.” Prime Minister Anthony Albanese was also concerned about Australia’s migration numbers and said,” The system is broken.”
